The 50 States: Alabama

So this obviously isn't a new idea -- I can think of a few that have started out doing a compendium of the 50 states. I'm going to start my own. Obviously the most ambitious of these projects is Sufjan Stevens. Sufjan has claimed that he will make an album for every one of the 50-states. With God on his side, he might actually have a chance.

The other group that (I'm aware of) embarked on a 50-state project was They Might Be Giants. They alo did their own version of the 50-state song.

So, with the introduction out of the way, it's best to start at the beginning, yes?

Alabama. Declared a state in 1819, Alabama has given us such innovations as Mardis Gras (I promise, it came from here, not LA), the rocket that went to the moon, first electric trolley system, the civil war, Hank AAron, Willie Mays, a band with the same name that can live up to all of the stereotypes, the first Miss America with a disability, Nat King Cole, Emmy Lou Harris, Hellen Keller, Joe Lewis, Rosa Parks, and the most covered song of all time.

Hmmm...I came into this quite late. I found a music post on Georgia but you may even be past that by now. I'm looking forward to my state, Michigan, and to seeing what music you can come up with for us. Huh...trying to think of something, and not really coming up with anything. Good luck. Maybe you can post Eminem just by virtue of his Detroit roots? A little Motown? It's making me glad I live on the opposite side of the state already...

By the way, for Alabama, what happened to the obvious, Lynard Skynard's "Sweet Home Alabama"??? No, it's not very original but...it's Alabama all right!
