The 50 States: Florida

Next up on our tour of the USA is Florida. Florida, you are warm. You are surrounded by sand and water. You are the mecca of rednecks and old people. I once took a long vacation (3-months) to you. Unfortunately, however, you do not have that many good songs written about you -- you do, though, have lots of ehhhh alright songs.

Made a state in 1845 florida is the one that brought us such things as space flight, the Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival, Gatorade, suntan lotion, refrigeration, riding lawn mowers, a river that flows north instead of south (St Johns River), alligators (FUCK OFF), an ATM machine for rollerbladers, 700 million cigars per year, the worlds largest strawberry shortcake, the sports fishing, shark, and dive capitals of the world, the longest river sailboat race in the world, Disney World, gun-toting-convenience-store-clerks, Pat Boone, Fay Dunaway, AJ McLean, Jim Morrison, Sidney Poitier, Janet Reno, David Robinson, and suspicious voting activities.

Never the less, we love you Florida!

Oh, dear! You've done it again! "Jacksonville Skyline" is about Jacksonville, NORTH CAROLINA - which not conincidentally is the city in which Ryan Adams grew up.
Nevertheless, enjoy the blog/project and keep up the good work!

Andrew -- Thanks for the heads up. I actually was thinking about that when I posted it but without any mention of NC in the song and the mention of the soldiers -- I just assumed it was jacksonville, fl.

Is there also a naval base in jacksonville, nc?

I suspect you are right and I should try and be less lazy about checking these things out.

Thanks for the comment, and keep up the good work on trying to keep me honest!

Dude,

How about Diplo's Florida: an entire good album of Florida! And the opening, title-track is one of the best on there.

Also,
Grandaddy: "Florida" (not an awesome song, but Grandaddy); and
Butthole Surfers: "Moving to Florida."

Also! And this one is important:

The Mountain Goats' entire album: Tallahassee; great album; really great.

And in case you wanted rock-a-billy... just in case:

Freddie Cannon: "Tallahassee Lassie"

Just sayin'.

Alright, so mentioning the Grandaddy song when it was already up there was just idiocy on my part.

By the way, I know you're from Sconny town so maybe you won't remember this, but some radio station did a spoof on Will Smith's "Miami," that was all about the Vikings going there the year that they went 15-1 and lost to Atlanta in the NFC Conference Championship, never making it to the big game. I'm sure everyone was trying to forget that as fast as possible, but it was so catchy that I'm still singing it to this day.
