The 50 States: Illinois

Oh Illinois -- noble displayer of cornfields and silos. You put the heart in heartland, and the plain in plains. Drive east and you'll find the silos keep getting bigger and bigger until they are skyscrapers. Stop before the lake and you're in for a treat. Chicago is a city of the world, one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited and I still make nearly monthly trips. I am in awe of your public library, your giant chrome jelly bean, and the Sears Tower. You're also the only place in the US I have ever been that has a 4am bartime, and for that -- well for that, I salut you!

Illinois, you have such distinguishing features as the worlds first aquarium, the worlds first skyscraper, the tallest building in north america, Metropolis, you were the first state to ratify the 13th amendment, McDonalds, Ronald Reagan, a huge fire, Abraham Lincoln, the ice cream sundae, worlds first silo, countries highest percentage of personalized license plates, the largest public library, Jane Addams, Gillian Anderson, my grandparents, Jack Benny, Ray Bradbury, Jennie Garth, Cindy Crawford, Richard Daley, Miles Davis, Walt Disney, Harrison Ford, Benny Goodman, Dorothy Hamil, Ernest Hemingway, Charlton Heston, Wild Bill, Rock Hudson, James Jones, Quincy Jones, David Mamet, Bill Murray, Bob Newhardt, Richard Pryor, Sam Shepard, Raquel Welch, Wilco, Andrew Bird, The Smashing Pumpkins, and and and, and the Oreo factory. Oh yeah, and you crazy micks in Chicago are going to dye the freakin' river green this weekend!
So -- next up is Indiana -- if you have any ideas of songs about indiana, drop them in the comments.

Later, kids!

Love your posts! Always something interesting, and a great mix of stuff, too.

As far as Indiana, the only two that come to mind are Tom Petty-"Mary Jane's Last Dance" and "Gary, Indiana" from the Music Man (I think?). Though that second one makes me wretch just a bit when I hear it. Although, the Jacksons were from Gary, so maybe some Jackson5 would count. Or just make it an all Gary post by including the theme from Diff'rnt Strokes and that noxious Kid Rock cowboy song that had Gary Coleman in the video.

Then again, bad idea. Scratch that.

for your Indian post, how about the Old '97s - "Bloomington"?
let me know if you need a copy.

Nice. Good call on the Wesley Willis. I also love his classic 'Rock n Roll McDonald's' about the downtown McD's. Abbie Hoffman's 'Chicago, Chicago' is always a good one too, but you've done the city proud.

I can only think of The Samples' 'Indiana,' which is actually kind of a pretty song.

Bwaaah? No "Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago" by Soul Coughing? Mike Doughty just called to tell me his feelings are deeply, deeply hurt. Otherwise he thinks your post is dope, 'specially that rip-roarin' Pixies tune.

Early 1970s AM radio classic -- "Indiana Wants Me" by R. Dean Taylor.

You didn't forget Low. That's the band that really personifies Illinois for me. About Indiana? Bottle Rockets; Indianapolis, Chameleons; Indiana (just know a great live-version) and I think Cole Porter is from Indiana. And Lee Ranaldo (of Sonic Youth) has a Bloomington too.

And I would really like to suggest Kokomo, but "Off the florida keys
There’s a place called Kokomo" says otherwise.

It's me again. Re: Indiana, wouldn't something by John Mellencamp qualify? Namely, "Small Town", which refers to his hometown of Seymour?

For Indiana, be sure to include Oscar Peterson's rendition of the jazz standard "Indiana."

Well of course, you need The Samples' "Indiana" - that's an obvious. And I suppose if you don't have at least one John Mellencamp on there, you'll be in trouble. Having gone to college at IU (but being from Chicago's Northwest suburbs), I learned very quickly that those who grew up in Indiana, really were from there, loved both The Samples and Mellencamp, whether or not us 'outsiders' shared their opinions on them. And, even though I started out unable to turn on the radio in my freshman dorm room, without hearing 'Pink Houses', and rolling my eyes in the process, I learned to appreciate him. Once I moved out of the dorms and was able to get better radio reception.

Awesome, nice job! I recommend adding "The El" by Rhett Miller, the lead singer of the Old 97's, a Dallas band that got popular while living in Chicago.
