The 50 States: Georgia

Hey kids -- it's another week and I'm up bright and early to bring you the grande state of Georgia.

Georgia, I visited you once and you thoroughly reminded me of that old ladies house in Great Expectations. You struck me as once grand, once dignified, once a beacon of southern money -- but now eroded, blown, struck, toppled, and decayed into dust. Your plantation manors and civil war remnants are now their own special kind of beautiful -- though only relics of what once was, they offer a striking and vibrant example of the leftovers of industrialization. Today, Atlanta is one of Americas landmark cities -- ripe with culture, class, and Ludacris.

Georgia, you became a state in 1788. You are the nations number one producer of peanuts, peaches, and peacans. You can appreciate fried chicken, and in Gainesville you outlawed eating chicken with a fork. You have also given us such great things as Vidalia onions, the Masters golf tournament, Coca-Cola, the bloodiest battle in American history (Chickamuga), the worlds largest sculpture, Jimmy Carter, the first state university, Ray Charles, Ty Cobb, Lawrence Fishburne, Amy Grant, Oliver Hardy, Hulk Hogan, Doc Holliday, Martin Luther King, Jr, Gladys Night, Blind Willie McTell, Otis Redding, Burt Reynolds, Little Richard, Jackie Robinson, Ray Stevens, Clarence Thomas, Travis Tritt, and Trisha Yearwood. Oh yeah, and Outkast.

You've also got about eleventy billion songs about you. I decided to stop after I found 50 (ok, maybe only 49) good ones.

One more idea, kids: in the last post the comments section started overflowing with suggestions on songs that I missed for Florida -- that's ok -- that's good, actually -- but in addition to recomending me songs about Georgia in these comments (and no doubt, I missed a couple hundred good ones) lets use this space to recommend me songs I may overlook for my upcoming post on Hawaii.

Nice Post ... but where's Georgia by Ludacris & Jamie Foxx?

For the real Hawaiian music ...
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole --- Hawaii 78, Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa man, This Hawaiian man, A Hawaiian Like Me, ... probably more. Check it out.

just moved to savannah two months ago for school. it is a friggin beautiful city. it was on the decline about a decade or two ago but the president of my school (savannah college of art and design) started taking over abandoned buildings and making classrooms and the historic district started getting a lot of tourists and rich people moving in. now the city is booming and i dunno if the streets will be able to handle any more traffic. outside of the historic district though, the ghetto still remains as well as some underlying racism. gotta love the hiphop from GA tho. I got an advance of T.I.'s new album and its sick. peace from the dirty

This is such a tremendous thing you're doing. I was raised in Georgia, and this is just the kind of thing to mentally transport me back. Thanks so much!

I was named for a friend of my dad's from Hawai'i, so I'm looking forward to that one too. Of course, it's obvious, but you wouldn't want to miss the theme song from Hawai'i 5-0.

Wikipedia says: "The state song is Hawaiʻi ponoʻī, written by King Kalākaua and composed by Henri Berger. Hawaiʻi Aloha is the unofficial state song, often sung in official state events." So if you could find either of those, it would probably be sweet.

Anything from Elvis' Blue Hawaii Soundtrack is usually considered a classic. And you can't fail with Bruddah Iz's "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i."

There's also a Strokes bootleg from their concert in Brazil called "Hawaii Aloha" that was originally supposed to be on their new album (in my opinion, they were mistaken to keep it off).

As for Georgia, Nina Simone's "Sunday in Savannah" is pretty awesome.

Radio Birdman - 'Aloha Steve & Danno'. You can't beat the Hawaii 5-0 theme.

Does the word "hawaiian" count? If so:

John prine does a song called "let's talk dirty in hawaiian." Great cut.

The Prine song is covered by new-folk supergroup Redbird, and available as a download from http://www.jeffreyfoucault.com .

Even if it doesn't:

The theme from Hawaii 5-0, of course.

iTunes lists the Strokes song "Hawaii" as coming from album "Monitor This" -- but I downloaded it and promptly forgot the source, so cannot confirm.

Also: I think some of us would allow the use of the words "islands" in a title, if you get stuck. Plenty there even without resorting to that awful duet between Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.

Anyway. Big fan. Admire your work, and damn you, I want my hard drive back.

thanks for the great tunes. for some cool old-school country hawaiian tunes, check out: 1) Jenks Tex Carmen, 2) Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant, and 3) Junior Brown. oh yeah, Spike Jones has at least one hawaiin song.

Hah, it's always amusing to hear an outsider's opinion of Georgia. I'm pretty anti-southern, I suppose, because though I've always lived here, it's in a rather suburban area, so we have neither the traditional culture (the fried chicken, the evidance of the old plantation type lifestyle, any sort of indication of argiculture) nor the hiphop scene of the city. I discovered what taxbax refers to with the ghettos and racism of Savannah this past Friday, though, as Beach, the high school who lost the basketball championship, was pretty much entirely black, which made my extremely diverse school look primarily white in comparison. I had no idea had such a high, but isolated, African-American population.

For Hawaii, don't forget "My Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua Hawai`i" written in the early 1930s by Bill Cogswell, Tommy Harrison & Johnny Noble. It has been recorded by LOTS of people including Les Paul, Hank Snow, the Mills Brothers and Jesse Colin Young.

I have been a Georgia native almost my whole life, I moved here in the seventies when I was very little. You seem to have hit on much of what is known from an outsider's point of view. There are, of course, as I'm sure is true of all of the states, many lesser known interesting and odd elements to this state. For further indepth study, I would recommend to anyone interested Georgia's Curiosities. I have sort of looked at it as a roadmap for exploration of all that is around. By far the most unusual site to see in Georgia that I know of is the statue in front of Rome's city hall. It is a statue of Remus and Romulus suckling their wolf mother. Oh, and it was donated to Rome, Ga in the 1930s by its sister city, Rome, Italy's current leader, Benito Mussolini.

One other thing though, that must not be overlooked, lets not forget that this state is the home to the Godfather of Soul, James Brown.
