The 50 States: Maine

Welcome back to our next installment of our tour of the 50-states! Maine has a decent helping of hipster indie tracks about it, so that's sort of a nice change of pace.

Maine gives us such great things as the eastern most city in the United States, lobsters, blueberries, the York that preceeded New York, toothpicks, Steven King, Dubya's summer home, LL Bean, Lighthouses, nations first sawmill, nations first incorporated city, the first american ship, the first naval battle in the us, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and this beautiful collection of songs.

Big Ups to all my fans. If you have any ideas about songs from Maryland -- let me know in the comments.

Dear Robbie,

For maryland-- I was once told that Maryland has much history with FOLK music.

Please also include our fallen brotha Tupac, Tony Braxton, and my personal favorite-- Billy Holiday.

regards,
loooooove CJ.

As a dyed-in-the-wool Mainiac, I thank you for this post. One thing you may want to add to your Maine Assets list is that we are the birthplace of Liv Tyler.

Great Blog,
Mr Njorl

I believe Randy Newman, Lyle Lovett and Gram Parsons all have songs with Baltimore in their titles.

Songs: Ohia has a song "Crab Orchard." Not sure if it is about Maryland, but Maryland is where DC folk go to swim in the ocean, eat seafood, etc.

Also, DC suburbs like "Silver Spring", "Bethesda" must appear in some songs, as has "Harper's Ferry." You might also want to look around for "Belmont"--the racetrack in Baltimore...

And the UM mascot: the terrapin.

Um ... the track in Baltimore is Pimlico (home of the legendary Preakness Stakes). Belmont is in New York.

Maryland songs?

The Star-Spangled Banner is the most obvious song (famously written in the Chesapeake near Baltimore).

Streets of Baltimore is a must. The Little Willies just released a solid version, and the classic versions are by Gram Parsons and the Statler Brothers.

There are songs named Baltimore by Nina Simone, Randy Newman or by the Drifters.

Baltimore Fire by Kate and Anna McGarrigle.

Baltimore Oriole by Hoagy Carmichael or John Mellencamp.

Earl of Baltimore by Terry Cashman (oddball paean to former Orioles manager Earl Weaver).

Anythng from Hairspray (or anything by John Waters).

Raining in Baltimore by the Counting Crows.

What's New in Baltimore? by Frank Zappa.

John Brown's Body by Paul Robeson or Pete Seeger (Brown's end came in Harper's Ferry, MD).

Some version of Maryland, My Maryland.

Ocean City by the Cole Younger Band.

The Crab Song by Faith No More.

Crab in My Pants by Dillinger (I don't know the song, but fascinating name).

It Ain't Easy Being Green (Jim Henson was a grad of the U of Maryland).

Terrapin by the Smashing Pumpkins.

And I second the request for Billie Holiday.

Some real cool musicians have been born in Baltimore and made their careers elsewhere: David Byrne, Bill Frisell, Frank Zappa, John Fahey, and Phillip Glass (how'd you like to hear a record made by that crew?)

Other Marylanders:
John Waters, H. L. Mencken, John Barth, Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman (and the Underground Railroad). Marylanders who sucked: Spiro Agnew, John Wilkes Booth

Maryland factoid: Maryland has more miles of shorline than any other state exept Alaska.

Oh, and a couple songs that you might miss: Dylan's "Tryin' to get to Heaven Before they Close the Door" and Primitive Radio Gods's "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand:" both have excessively long titles, and both mention Baltimore, hon.
